More than 50 passengers escaped unhurt after a bus caught fire early Friday morning in Gilgil along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
The fire is said to have started after the bus stopped in Gilgil town to change a tire that had burst while all passengers were still on board.
Gilgil OCPD Emmanuel Opuru who confirmed the incident said no injuries were reported during the 3 am incident but they suspect the fire was caused by a mechanical problem.
Police who were patrolling the highway acted quickly and assisted passengers to get off the Greenline Services operated bus.
“No one was injured during the incident but unfortunately the majority of the passengers lost all their luggage to the fire,” said Opuru.
One of the passengers, Edna Nafula, said their journey was cut short when one of the tyres burst after arriving in Gilgil town.
Nafula said the driver parked the bus on the roadside before the bus started emitting smoke from the engine.
“The driver parked the bus by the roadside to change the tyre but there was smoke from the engine and in minutes, a fire erupted completely burning our luggage,” said Nafula.
