The year 2017 proved to be one of the busiest in the history of Mombasa politics.

Besides being Kenya's second largest city, Mombasa played a very important role in the 2017 race to State House pitting President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga.

However, at the same time, local politics pitting Governor Hassan Joho and Senator Hassan Omar played out in public and Raila found himself at the centre of the storm.

August 5 proved to be Raila's most challenging moment in his decades-long political career. The ODM supremo had not been publicly embarrassed as it happened that day- he was jeered and heckled by Omar and Joho supporters during a mega political rally at Mama Ngina Grounds.

Raila had called Joho and Omar to the podium and asked but failed to endorse anyone. Instead, he asked voters to vote for any of the two as both were in NASA and were his sons.

But Joho supporters shouted him down, demanding that he endorses the fiery Governor. It took the intervention of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi to 'save' Raila from irate youth.

Earlier, pro-Joho supporters had blocked Omar from making to the podium saying that the Senator was a Jubilee 'mole' in NASA.

But when he finally made it to the podium, the teary Omar blamed Joho for his woes even as he claimed that plan to 'evict' him from the event had been sponsored by Joho.

While castigating Joho's leadership style, Omar, a one-time Joho ally claimed that the ODM deputy party leader had run the county and vowed to fix it once he is elected as Governor.

But the hostile crowd could hear none of it as he was pelted with stones forcing ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi to shield him.

When his turn came, Joho claimed that Omar was a Jubilee project used to rock the NASA boat from within.
