As 2017 comes to a close, the year undoubtedly proved to be one of the most eventful in the history of Coast region politics.Women politicians took the political scene by storm, reach unprecedented heights leaving their male counterparts in shock.

Hoping to spread her political tentacles, then serving as Kilifi Women Rep, Aisha Jumwa Katana contested for Malindi MP seat- a race which was dominated by men including incumbent Willy Mtengo.

First, she trounced Mtengo during ODM nominations before cementing her new-found political mettle in the August 8 poll with a landslide victory, cutting short Mtengo's  one year tenure in Parliament.

By so doing, the firebrand Jumwa became the first female MP of the over half a century old Malindi constituency.

In the neighboring Mombasa County, Mishi Mboko, then serving as Women Rep. contested for Likoni MP. The then area lawmaker Masoud Mwahima had in 2016 decamped to Jubilee to the chagrin of his supporters- his move throwing political scale off balance.

During the nominations for the ODM ticket, Mboko defeated her main rival Hamisi Domoko. And from there, Mwahima's fate was as good as sealed.

In the August 8 contest, the vocal Mboko made history to become the first female Likoni MP as she sent the incumbent home.

Elsewhere in Kwale County, Fatuma Achani Mohammed was elected Deputy Governor for a second term. This is despite vying for the position. on unpopular Jubilee Party ticket alongside her boss Governor Salim Mvurya.

The vocal Lawyer has since emerged as Mvurya's potential successor when his term comes to an end in 2022.
