Emerging details indicate that a probe has been launched into the refurbished Kisumu Port, which makes it just another of the mega projects in the county under probe.
The port, renovated at a cost of Sh3 billion, was initially set to be launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in August, an event that was to be attended by several regional presidents.
The Standard has established that its among the projects being probed to corroborate the value of the work done, as well as the Sh1.7 oil jetty owned by the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).
The delay has been questioned by the county residents who are wondering why the port is yet to begin operations, despite initial publicity that it would greatly benefit the city.
"When it started, it was hyped like it would be done in 100 to 200 days. But we were surprised it was not completed," Kisumu County Residents Voice Chair Audi Ogada said on Saturday.
He noted that the port's expansion has also negatively affected many lives around the port area, in the name of those whose stalls were demolished to create room for it.
"So many people who were employed in the businesses that were pulled down to pave way for the port expansion are suffering. They have no jobs,’’ he added.
When complete, the port will link Kenya to her neighbours with whom she shares Lake Victoria. The biggest cargo ship, MV Uhuru, has been repaired awaiting to begin operations.
The Port renovation has largely been seen as a fruit of the 2018 truce between Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
