Caroline Egoki's morgue was demolished amid complaints from locals that it was built in a residential area, which is not the right place for establishment of such.

The residents of Emusonga Estate within Kakamega town, also lamented that the construction of the facility comes as an interruption to their lives.

“Where will our children play? This was not an ideal project. It would be an abomination for a mortuary to be set up in a residential place,” one of the residents told Standard.

The residents said they had asked the woman to establish another venture that can match the area, like a school or hotel.

On Wednesday, the county government deployed police officers to man the area as county bulldozers flattened the morgue, amid complaints from the owner's family.

The developer's kin Tracy termed the demolition unlawful, stating that they followed all the required procedures, adding that it was the work of a businessman out to frustrate them.

"We have all the documentation supporting the setting up of the project. However, we have been intimidated since construction began,” she said.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya had earlier warned county officials not to allow the establishment and operation of such facilities in residential areas.
