The County Government of Mombasa has intensified the plan to end Malaria across Mombasa by 2021.
Through the Department of Health Services, the County Government is conducting a series of health campaigns and programmes across the six Sub-counties with an aim of creating awareness to the public on the preventive and curative measures of curbing the killer disease.
The pre-elimination campaigns and treatments being conducted by health officers are targeting residents living in various informal settlement areas, schools and Madrasah.
Some of the interventions the department is implementing include the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, residual spraying and fogging, increasing supply of anti-malaria drugs as well as encouraging communities to embrace early diagnosis and treatment.
The County Public Health Chief Officer Aisha Abubakar said Mombasa County has recorded remarkable decline in confirmed malaria cases over the last four years after the County Government implemented several interventions including public awareness creation through barazas, and community dialogues.
Aisha indicated sustaining progression in ending malaria requires greater collaboration, innovation and funding across sectors.
Health officials in the county are also conducting research at the Coast Provincial General Hospital so as to have better approaches in countering the fight against Malaria and other mosquito related diseases such as Chikungunya.
According to the World Health Organisation, malaria kills a child under the age of 5 every 2 minutes and so children remain one of the most vulnerable groups affected by the disease.
