Heartburn is actually a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease. The condition is caused by acid refluxing back to the gullet. Most of the time the different foods we eat cause heartburns. These foods trigger increased stomach acid secretion, therefore, setting the stage for heartburn.  Caffeine, carbonated beverages, acidic juices such as orange juice, pineapple, and acidic foods like tomatoes and chocolate are common causes of heartburns.

Pregnant women are also victims of heartburn. Pregnancy can cause increased pressure within the abdominal cavity affecting the lower esophageal sphincter.  People who are obese also experience heartburn under similar conditions in pregnant women.   

Smoking and consumption of foods that have high-fat contents are notorious for causing heartburns. They may lead to relaxation of the esophageal sphincter which acts as a barrier between the esophagus and stomach and when it relaxes the stomach acid escapes into the esophagus hence leading to a heartburn. These foods also stimulate the release of the hormone known as cholecystokinin which might make the lower esophageal to relax causing acid influx.      

Diseases of the esophagus can also cause heartburns. A hiatal hernia this whereby apart from the stomach lies within the chest instead of in the abdomen which affects the way the lower esophageal sphincter works.
