Ngata and Salgaa residents along Nakuru-Eldoret highway have blamed the high number of fatal accidents in the area on animals grazing by the road.

The residents said herders from  other regions moved their animals to the area to graze.

"Most accidents occur as drivers tries to escape hitting animals crossing on the road. Herders should graze their cattle in far places from the road," said Samuel Maina, a resident.

He urged residents in the area to ensure there are no animals grazing by the road to avoid confusing motorists especially at night.

Technical secretary for speed governors and road safety association Wambugu Nyamu has asked security officials to take action against those grazing cattle near the road.

"We will not continue losing lives. Anyone grazing livestock near the road should stop or be arrested as this will help reduce accidents in this area perceived to be a blackspot," Nyamu said.

On Sunday, 12 people died after a fatal road crash at Salgaa area.
