Francis Atwoli has made revelations as to why he did not condole with the family of the late former Kiharu MP, former multiparty democracy leader Kenneth Matiba.
The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary general publicly confessed that he was part of the government system that persecuted and detained Matiba during agitation for a return to multiparty democracy in the early 1990s when KANU was the only political party.
The outspoken trade unionist disclosed he was part of mobilizers of YK92 (Youth for Kanu 92) movement which persecuted and tortured Matiba as he fought for multiparty.
He slammed some political leaders who went to Matiba's home to condole with the family, despite being colleagues in YK92.
"I was surprised to see some of the people I worked together with in Kanu back then, going to condole with the late Matiba’s family. But I chose not go to pretend because I was one of the main mobilizers of YK92 (Youth for Kanu 92) movement,” Atwoli said on Sunday.
Speaking during Cotu Labour Day prayer service at St Stephen’s Cathedral, at Jogoo Road in Nairobi, he noted that he could not betray Matiba's remains by pretending to publicly condole with his family.
Also present at the service were Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, Woman Representative Esther Passaris, KNUT Secretary-General and Nominated ML Wilson Sossion, Governor Mike Sonko and Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukurr Yattani.
