The residents held a peaceful demonstration on Thursday along the Bahati Nakuru Highway, where they demanded the immediate release of their MP Kimani Ngunjiri who is still being held in custody together with his seven counterparts over hate speech.

Led by Bahati CDF Chairman Antony Njui and other officials, they accused the court of not releasing the MP on bond pending investigations into the alleged hate speech utterances.

According to Njui, who addressed the media at Heshima Trading Centre, the court has denied Kimani a bond because “he has been on the fore front fighting unfair hearing in the Kenyan courts”.

“We are not demonstrating against the current government but the court. We have read the constitution and understand it well. We demand the immediate release of our Member of Parliament, and we are telling the courts that it is wrong; it is unconstitutional to hold him in remand,” he said.

“We have seen people who commit a crime, murder and rape being released on bond, what is this that Kimani has done such that he has been denied the bond,” he added.
