University students during a demonstration [Photo/standard media]Since the beginning of October 2017, learning in a number of Kenyan universities has been affected due to different reason ranging from student unrest to lecturers strikes. Here are some of the universities affected.University Of NairobiIn October 2017, when their former students' leader, Babu  Owino was arrested for 'insulting' the president, they took to streets in protest to demand for his immediate release. They were countered by anti riot police which saw many students hospitalized. This move prompted the university administration to order for immediate closure.Maseno University(MSU)The Kisumu county based university experienced unrest prior to the repeat October polls. Students engaged the police in running battles, as they destroyed the IEBC merchandise in the university premises. This elecited chaos within and outside the university. The administration then resolved to suspend semester activities to next year January 2018.Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT)On 14th November 2017, the Jomo Kenyatta University Students Organization(JKUSO) issued a strike notice barely two days to the much hyped 30th graduation ceremony of the university. Due to the tension and fear for the aftermath of protests, the university was closed indefinitely. Kenyatta University(KU)Just after the elections for their Student council leaders, the students became untamed and resorted to destroying properties of their university including setting ablaze the old administration block. One student lost her life in the melee. Many other universities have also been closed as a result of students unrest of students. They include Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Technical University of Mombasa(TUM), Daystar University. On Thursday, Laikupia University students engaged the police in running battles. They barricaded Nairobi- Nakuru highway to protest after a colleague was knocked down by a speeding car, dying on the spot.
