Uasin Gishu MCAs on Tuesday voted to revert back to the committee level a motion that sought to establish a County Rural Water Development Services.

Nominated MCA Dr Catherine Barmao had moved the motion in what she termed as an attempt to help ensure locals have access to clean and safer water.

"Urban residents have Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) which supplies water to them we now need the County Rural Water Development Services to cater for locals in rural areas as article 143 of our constitution provides that every person has a right to clean and safe water," Dr Barmao noted.

Ainabkoi MCA Hosea Some seconded the motion which he said would go along way towards helping the country achieve sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that includes provision of water.

Several MCA's had supported the motion before Cheptiret/Kipchamo MCA Gilbert Tenai rose to move that it be reverted back to the committee level.

"This is a good move but we must be aware that we have several water providers and we need to be careful not to pass a motion that will be in conflict with existing legislation. This is why I propose that this motion is taken back to committee level for further deliberations and involvement of all stakeholders," said Tenai who is also the Assembly's Deputy majority Chief Whip.

The motion will now be taken back to the Committee on Environment, Water and Natural Resources for further discussions before it's returned to the Assembly for deliberations.
