The story is well captured in Moi’s biography, Moi: The Making of an African Statesman, by British author Andrew MortonMorton claimed that Mr Moi was slapped by the then Rift Valley police commandant James Mungai.

Moi, through his mouthpiece Lee Njiru, has however rubbished the claims. In an exclusive interview to Sunday Nation, Njiru said ‘under no circumstances would such events have occurred’.

“There’s no probability whatsoever that it could have happened,” Njiru said.

He added:  “It was okay to verbally attack Moi, but no one could touch him. Not even Kenyatta. Politicking ended where Moi’s body began.”

Njiru, a long time press secretary to Moi, said the events as narrated by Morton are just fabrications.

"Moi’s heavily armed bodyguards would have instantly shot him dead,” he said.
