A mother and her baby died of cholera in Mombasa County following the new cases that have reported in the county’s informal settlements.Mombasa Health CeC Hazel Koitaba said the county department of health has put up measures to contain the spread of the disease.Health facilities in the county have been operating as treatment centres after new cases were reported in slums located near dumpsites two weeks ago.“We have put up all the necessary measures to contain the situation. We have had about 25 admissions, but majority are diarrheal cases. We are isolating them at Mwembe Tayari Health Centre,” said Koitaba.“The disease was caused by the rains and stagnant water. We are spraying all the wells to reduce infections,” she added.County Chief Health Officer Khadija Shikely said a team of professionals are already on the ground to ensure the disease is brought under control.Shikely said patients showing symptoms of cholera have been put under close observation to contain the disease. She urged the affected areas to observe high standards of hygiene in order to prevent the spread of the disease.“In a bid to counter the rising cholera cases we have established the treatment centres. We have 50 diarrheal cases in Mombasa, 15 due to cholera. Cholera cases have been reported in Changamwe, Kalahari Jomvu, Kibarani, Moroto, Makande and Mshomoroni are areas,” said Shikely.“We are raising awareness and cleaning the environment. Don't wait for the county to clear garbage. We are working with all departments to deal with the cases,” she added, as quoted by the Nation.
