There were celebrations in Mombasa County on Tuesday after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i released this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam results.Among the top candidates in the 2017 exams was Sewe Glen from Busy Bee School who scored 436 marks and his schoolmate Abdulatif Swaleh Said who scored 433 out of the possible 500 marks.Glen attributed his success to hard work, ambition and determination, saying support from parents and prayers led to his excellent performance.Swaleh Ramah of Saint Kevin Hill School, Nyali, scored 432 marks while Eugene Otieno of Nyali primary scored 426 marks.14-year old Hanaan Amer scored 428 marks while 15-year old Ali Hussein who wants to study medicine also scored 428 marks. In Nyali primary school, Grace Kiboros scored 421 marks, Stacy Wango 405 marks while Stacy Munyao got 417 marks.Other schools in the county which posted impressive results include Light Academy, Ganjoni primary school and Bethany Christian Academy. Speaking on Tuesday morning at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi when he released the results, Matiang’i noted that public primary schools performed better than private institutions. The CS said the government will set up a special fund that will be allocated to public schools that have produced students in the top 100 category for purposes of improving the infrastructure and growing their capacity.“As we went round you can tell clearly that there was much more seriousness and focus in our candidates than last year. I am so grateful to the teachers. Primary school teachers are our heroes,” Matiang’i.
