NASA leader Raila Odinga is facing a race against time to arrest any fallout within his loyal Coast region support base.Having supported him overwhelmingly since 2007, Coast is Raila's second political base after his Luo Nyanza backyard. However, the region could be drifting away. The cracks in NASA started with the appointment into the crucial leadership positions in the two houses of Parliament- National Assembly and Senate.According to Coast MPs elected on a NASA ticket, the coalition had shortchanged them.President Uhuru Kenyatta is said to have been keen to make political capital out of the disgruntlement within NASA, to lure the leaders to join Jubilee. However, it was not to be as they declared that they would remain in NASA and fight from within. To ease political tension within the coalition, outspoken Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa was nominated to the powerful Parliamentary Service Commision (PSC). However, the joy was short lived as Msambweni MP Suleiman Dori reignited the debate on the 'exclusion' of the region by the coalition.According to the lawmaker, he regrets supporting NASA during the August 8 poll. He went further to apologise to the residents for asking them to support the coalition.Dori's sentiment was echoed by Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo (Wiper) who said that they are neither interested in NASA nor Jubilee. On Monday, the crucial Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the National Assembly which was widely expected to be chaired by an MP from Coast, was filled up with Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi taking up the chairmanship. The move effectively ended Coast MPs hope for a top House leadership position.Likoni MP Mishi Mboko was touted as a potential House leader. But the hopes have gone up in smoke. To further compound the region's frustrations in NASA is the recent list of nominees to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) as the Coast region had no single nominee. With Raila's own political future shrouded in uncertainties, the former Premier will have to overcome bruising internal rivalry first within his party especially from Coast MPs.Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
