Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has warmed the opposition alliance NASA over its planned mega demonstrations in the county. In a statement on his Twitter account Friday, moments after his Kisumu counterpart Anyang' Nyong'o banned picketing in his county suggesting that they are concentrated on the capital, Sonko now says that his government will not again condone cases of crime that have been witnessed in past similar events.''I wish to warn my colleague that Nairobi county will never entertain goons and criminals who take advantage of the situation to harass, intimidate, molest, rape, loot and destroy properties belonging to innocent Kenyans,'' he says. The governor who has however acknowledged that the opposition supporters have the right to demonstrate and picket have maintained that they have to practice strict adherence to the law should the demos prove inevitable. He has further warned that any criminal act will be countered by the full force of the law blaming deteriorating economic status in the county on the alliance's activities.''We have noted that revenue collection has declined on the days of public demonstrations and as a result, the economy of Nairobi City County has continued to suffer,'' says the governor.''Whereas the opposition supporters have a constitutional right to picket, it must be done within the law.Acts of hooliganism shall never be tolerated in Nairobi and culprits will face the full force of the law,'' the tweet further reads.NASA has retorted to demos in its bid to force the ruling Jubilee party into an electoral reforms dialogue.
