The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has axed Senior Counsel Paul Muite and PLO Lumumba. The two were among the top lawyers who were chosen to represent the electoral body. However, they lost the case and IEBC was directed to hold repeat presidential polls. Earlier, two IEBC commissioners had revealed to the Star that the two will be axed for failing to perform as expected. The commissioners stated that there were evident flaws in the defense prompting a review of contracts with external and internal lawyers. One commissioner blamed the performance of the August legal team. According to the IEBC, their contradictions led to the defeat by lawyer James Orengo and company.“There have been clear instances of sabotage. We must cure this as we anticipate another presidential petition. It was rather obvious that we had glaring contradictions in our defense team,” one commissioner said as quoted by the Star. They stated that the performance displayed in the past petition demanded that the legal team be strengthened. This led to the axing of Muite and Lumumba. “We may not take any chances, our legal team must be strengthened,” the commissioner added.
