As curtains fall on 2017, the year that presented Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho with mixed political fortunes, 2018 will not be any different in the murky world of politics.

From bitter political divorce with his erstwhile friend and deputy Hazel Katana to battling claims of possessing fake academic credentials, Joho had a challenging year.

However, he overcame all the challenges to win the gubernatorial race with a landslide.

But fresh hiccups still lie ahead.

Joho succession race has started in earnest with his would-be successors already beating political drums.

But Joho may find himself in between the bitter political rivalry that is slowly brewing in Mombasa.

Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir is a leading contender for the seat.

The two-time lawmaker who is also the Public Investments Committee chairman in the National Assembly is Joho's political rock and is said to be running the Governor's political wing.

Ali Mbogo, Kisauni MP, who floored another Joho key ally Rashid Bedzimba in the August 8 poll is said to be eyeing Joho's seat.

The lawmaker who was elected on a Wiper ticket is realigning himself to the Joho side in what is seen as an attempt to get Joho's political blessings ahead of 2022.

He (Mbogo), a wealthy businessman, has attended all Joho functions.

But there comes one big dilemma for Joho: Bedzimba has filed a petition challenging Mbogo's win.

With the two politicians being Joho buddies, it remains unclear on who he will support in case of a by-election.

Further, it is claimed that Joho's hand-picked successor is Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Harub Khatri.

If the claim is anything to go by, then a lot is expected in Mombasa's politics in 2018 going forward.
