Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho was one of the main newsmakers in 2017.

Politically speaking, the combative politician had one of the most fulfilling political years which propelled him to political greatness.

And that was just the tip of an iceberg. A lot is in store and 2018 will undoubtedly shape up his political trajectory going forward.

With the High Court yet to make a ruling on the petition challenging his win filed by former Senator Hassan Omar, the Court's decision will make or break him politically.

Should his win be upheld, Joho would have won the first battle against his former political friend-turned-for.

On the other hand, a nullification of his win will take him back to the drawing board in his bid to recapture the seat in case of a by-election.

Elsewhere, alongside Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, the two firebrand politicians have opened a new political war front- Coast region secession call.

With many observers viewing the move as a political strategy for the duo to remain politically relevant ahead of 2022 election, they should play their cards well.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has hinted that he will take a political backseat ahead of 2022, Joho's political war may now be shifted to Deputy President William Ruto. Both Ruto and Joho are known for their deep pockets and shrewd political tactics.

Should he manage to ring-fence his Coast region political territory from Ruto's forays, then Joho will have a precious headstart in his quest to occupy State House.

Further, on the local political scene, Joho will have to tame a rejuvenated Tourism CS Najib Balala who is trying to reinvent his political career.

Together with Hassan Omar, the ODM deputy party leader will have a monumental task even as political drums start beating.
