Kisumu and Mombasa will be among cities that will host the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament matches, Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario has said.
Wario while speaking on the sidelines of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections at Kasarani in Nairobi on Wednesday said that the country has only two years to prepare for the championship.
The CS said that structures are being put in place to ensure that the 2018 championship is a success.
“Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi are among the cities that will host the 2018 CHAN matches but we are still deliberating on the matter and we will give updates as we start preparing for the tournament,” he said.
Wario added that other towns are likely to host matches for the 2018 tournament.
The CS said that the 2018 African tournament will be an opportunity for Kenya to showcase its best to the world.
He said that the tournament is a preserve for locally based players only.
Kenya was handed the mantle to host the 2018 championship after this year’s tournament concluded in Kigali Rwanda last Sunday where Democratic Republic of Congo won the tournament by beating Mali 3-0 in the finals.
The capability of Kenya holding the championship has been questioned by experts basing on the fact there are no proper infrastructures and facilities in terms of stadiums.
