A section of Nakuru residents have protested that police officers at Salgaa police station are extorting money from motorists plying the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
They say the officers manning the station belong to a certain group and arrest motorists on the pretext of speeding.
The officers are reported to have recently arrested a senior civil servant from whom they allegedly solicited a bribe even though he was not speeding.
The civil servant, who did not want to be named, said he has reported the matter to the Johnstone Kavuludi-led National Police Service Commission for action.
A resident, Daniel Kibet, said the officers have annoyed many people and should be sacked with Mereru Tangai adding: “They need to be taken to Lamu to restore peace there”.
Joseph Gishanga said he has twice been ‘harassed’ by the police officers there, adding: “There is a guy that takes your car keys and ensures you pay him between Sh3,000 and Sh5,000.
“Also, there is a lady who takes your car keys and you have to follow her to her house. If you claim not to have any more money on you, she physically examines your pockets by hand.”
Another motorist, Dee Deesat, said the same sad situation prevails at the roadblock at Elburgon where he reports: “There is this cop who is so daring and asks for money from all and sundry.
“That roadblock only serves to solicit for funds. Matatus carry more people and they all pass under the same roadblock”.
Dennis Warama said one of his workmates was forced to give a Sh3,000 bribe with Charles Okumu adding: “Stern action should be taken to those so-called police officer. They are used to taking bribes in that route”.
