A Nakuru Member of County Assembly (MCA) has died.

Nominated TNA ward representative Damaris Mbuthia met her death last night while receiving breast cancer treatment at the MP Shah hospital in Nairobi.

MCA Catherine Njeri, who was with the deceased when she passed on, confirmed her demise, saying: “She is with the Lord, please take courage”.

Initial reports indicate that the late MCA, who is also a former Nakuru deputy mayor, was recuperating at home but on Thursday, her condition became critical and she was taken to the ICU unit at the Nairobi-based hospital.

On Valentine’s Day, a major harambee was conducted at Hotel Waterbuck in Nakuru town for settling hospital expenses incurred by the nominated MCA, who was then receiving treatment in India. The harambee was conducted by Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua.

Mbuthia was last January airlifted to India for treatment over a breast cancerous condition that was found not to be malignant. The ex-councilor’s condition, it was found out in a New Delhi hospital, could not spread to other parts of her body, said medics at the time.

Her death comes only four days after a Molo resident, Gladys Wanjiku, died of cancer while receiving treatment in India. Wanjiku is set to be buried on Monday at the family Turi farm home.

The MCA died just a day after the Nakuru County government announced that it has set aside Sh10 million to purchase a cancer screening machine to help with cancer-related illness.
