Sonko assented to the new outdoor advertising rules amid a public uproar on destruction of the environment in the city by advertising firms.

The law will govern the industry that displays adverts on billboards, sky signs, directional signs, clocks and other out of home media.

It provides a framework to regulate the industry that employs thousands of Kenyans and generates millions in revenue.

Outdoor advertising is the fifth largest source of revenue for the Nairobi county government, accounting for over Sh700 million annually.

The CEC for Lands, Housing and Urban Planning Charles Kerich, County Secretary Peter Kariuki, County Attorney Lydia Kwamboka and the Chairman of the Nairobi County Assembly Planning Committee Anthony Kiragu witnessed the event alongside other senior county officials.

Speaking after Sonko had signed the law, Kerich said the county government will facilitate the outdoor advertising industry to ensure compliance to the law, including timely payments of dues to the county government.

“With the enactment of the new rules, we expect order and sanity to prevail in the sector as well as increased revenue collection from outdoor advertising licensing, stated Kerich.
