Former Rongo lawmaker Dalmas Otieno's recent nomination into the Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC) has a deeper motive.
Otieno's nomination came at a time when the Migori Senatorial contest was picking pace, in what seems like a political move aimed at fooling opposition leader Raila Odinga.
This is most likely a plan by Deputy President William Ruto to better his winning chances in his 2022 presidential bid and could be using Otieno as a bait to the Luo people.
With Otieno on the inside, Ruto will have it easier campaigning in Nyanza and will have better chances of getting some votes, basing his argument on the fact that the government remembered the region.
Also, coming from the government side, Otieno will be more like to win his seat of choice in the 2022 race, as he will enjoy government support and is most likely to come back more loaded financially.
With him as either the Senator or Governor in the region currently completely allied to the opposition, Ruto will be more comfortable touring the region.
He will also have it easier using the veteran leader to erode Raila's complete 'ownership' of the county and maybe the entire Luo Nyanza region with time.
Also, the DP will have broken into Raila's only remaining solid bedrock and will have a good time mocking Raila whom he has not been in good political terms with after they parted ways in 2010.
