In 1998, his Wife Pauline Musyoka smuggled him from Jogoo House when he was the Education Minister after striking teachers surrounded the building.

Led by their leaders Ambrose Adongo and John Katumanga, the teachers went on strike demanding better pay and improvement of working conditions.

Kalonzo could not leave the building as teachers resolved to stay around until their grievances were addressed.

In his book "Against All Odds", Kalonzo records that the teachers were inspecting all vehicles that were getting into the building's premises to ensure that he did not leave.

He tried to trick them out but his efforts didn't bear fruits.

‘’At one point during the strike, hundreds of teachers had picketed the entire Harambee Avenue, outside the ministry. They inspected each and every vehicle entering and leaving Jogoo House demanding to talk to “the minister with a baby face,” Kalonzo states in the book.

Kalonzo revealed that he was compelled to call his wife.

Pauline was not known by many in the country then.

She came to the building with her car unnoticed.

Pauline reportedly tricked the teachers and made her way into the place before driving out with Kalonzo.
