A family is yet to come to terms with an incident where thieves broke into a kitchen and stole ‘githeri’ meant to feed mourners at a funeral in Nyaturubo village in Nyaribari Chache on Friday.

One of the family members, Duke Karori claimed that unknown people sneaked into the kitchen and made away with the ‘githeri’ which was had been cooked in a large sufuria while the service was ongoing.

 “Githeri was cooked on Thursday night so that mourners can eat after burial. It was shocking that when the burial ceremony was over, we found githeri and the sufuria missing from the kitchen,” he said. 

Karori added that they tried launched a search in all the 3 houses at the homestead but found nothing.

“We searched everywhere in the 3 houses at the homestead and we didn’t find the food until we noticed that the kitchen’s window had been broken where the thieves escaped through,” he dejectedly said.

Area assistant chief, Peter Oyondi condemned the incident saying it is shameful for thieves to steal especially during a funeral.

“It is shameful that thieves stole githeri which was meant to be given to mourners who had attended the funeral. Investigations are ongoing and whoever who will be caught will face the law,” he said. 

He called on residents to share information with the police about the incident to ensure the offenders are arrested.

The chief said the sufuria which the thieves stole with githeri inside had been borrowed and should be returned to the deceased family.
