Consequently, it is home to millions of people, among them jobless youth who are struggling to make ends meet.

Ironically, one of the city’s biggest challenges is water shortages, this being despite the fact that it borders Lake Victoria, popularly known as Nam-Lolwe by locals.

However, some young people have since come up with mechanisms to save the residents from the thirst menace while cashing-in at the same time, thanks to the thriving water business.

With only a small percentage of people having access to piped water, the youth have established their own water points, from where they ferry the important commodity and sell it to the people in need.

The water is sold in 20 liter jerrycans, with the prices varying according to the destination, while other residents line up at the water points to directly secure several liters.

The case is similar to iced water which is sold to thirsty locals and travelers, another business that enables the youth smile all the way to the banks.

People selling ice-cream are also making a kill in the lakeside city, as the commodity is also among the most sought especially during dry and hot periods.
