Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday busted staff at Pumwani hospital hiding bodies of infants in cartons.
Working on a tip off, Sonko took a motorbike to the hospital and stormed one office where he asked about the death of infants.
The staff was asked to open a carton in the room where Sonko found one body.
A search in two more cartons showed five and six bodies hidden respectively.
The bodies had been stuffed in nylon papers.
Sonko broadcasted the raid on a live video on his social media account.
“This is a police matter. You can’t lose 12 babies in a day,” Sonko is heard lamenting.
According to sources, Sonko acted after he was informed there were massive deaths of babies in the hospital after a ‘deliberate move by some staff’.
“Conducting impromptu visit at Pumwani Hospital, where it’s alleged by members of the public that the management shut down the machines at the Maternity Wing, leading to loss of lives of young ones," Sonko says in the video.
He added: "I want to categorically state that human life must be respected no matter the case. Stern action will be taken against anyone found to be sabotaging the good services offered to our mothers and sisters who come to deliver in this facility."
The management was unable to explain why the bodies were in a store wrapped in polythenes and not in the mortuary.
