A section of residents in Eldoret town has welcomed a proposal by President Uhuru Kenyatta that tax on fuel is lowered from the current 16 per cent to 8 per cent.
The residents said the move will help relieve the burden the common mwananchi has been subjected to since the Value Added Tax (TAX) tax was effected this month.
“I want to thank President Kenyatta for this move but he should totally do away with it since poor Kenyans are suffering or he should look for alternative ways to collect tax rather than imposing it on petroleum products,” said Bishop Wilson Kurui in Eldoret town, Friday.
“It is sad that I cannot afford to even buy paraffin or travel from my place to town due to the increase but hopefully after the decrease of tax life will be much better,” added another local, Millicent Korir.
The residents, however, urged the president to ensure that the 8 per cent VAT on petroleum products is effected immediately to avoid common man from being exploited.
“The time when the price was increased those selling fuel increased it with immediate effect, they should also reciprocate the same by reducing their price immediately,” noted John Komen, a farmer.
They also called on matatu owners to reduce their fares of what had been increased once the 8 per cent tax proposed by the head of state is approved by the parliament which has been recalled for special sittings to discuss the president's proposal.
