For the last couple of months, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has left politicians shivering over his intensified trips in Gusii region.

So unpredictable he is that Matiang'i's roots from Kisii and Nyamira Counties has even confused politicians plotting to succeed governors James Ongwae (Kisii) and John Nyagarama (Nyamira).

Over the weekends, the minister, despite serving the entire country, spends most of the time attending social functions in both counties, further leaving pundits in a state of confusion.

At disposal is his helicopter which easily facilitates movements across the two regions, a slight advantage that gives him a wide audience.

"We heard that he's running for Nyamira gubernatorial seat and some also link him to Kisii. As strategists, we find it difficult to counter him," said a strategist, close to Borabu MP Ben Momanyi.

Mr. Momanyi along with former Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire have poised themselves as strong contestants in Nyamira gubernatorial race.

At Nyansiongo on Friday, a rather displeased  Momanyi insisted that his gubernatorial ambitions are unstoppable.

"I know the people of Nyamira and I know what they want. When that time comes, I'll cherish your backup," he said as Matiang'i listened carefully.

After Nyansiongo's function on Friday, Matiang'i toured Nyamira SDA church over the weekend but steered off local politics thus confusing local politicians.

In a recent interview at Egesa FM, Kitutu Chache South MP had insisted that he doesn't fear anyone, adding that he would welcome Matiang'i to the race if he's willing.

"He's my brother and I respect him. I am ready to square it out with him with a lot of respect and courtesy," he said.

Political analyst Gideon Mamboleo says Matiang'i's status makes it possible for politicians to shiver.

"He's in a powerful Ministry and has resources at his disposal. No politician can dare underrate him."
