“Even people who own billions in the world started small,” he says.

Here are five business ventures you can start with only Sh1000 or even less in Nairobi.

1. Shoe shining

It is applicable during the rainy season but also works during the dusty season.

What you need here is shoe polish, a brush, some water and rags for wiping the shoes. 

You also need a stool and wiping towels which in total cost around 1000 bob.

For this business, you can station it at bus stages, entrance to top supermarkets, hotels and banks.

The shoe shining business is lucrative if you do it right by maintaining customer satisfaction.

2. Selling airtime

It is one of the booming business in the city.

The best way to do it is to go the telecommunication companies where they sale on wholesale and you in turn sale at normal prices.

You can be hawking the airtime scratch cards in matatus, markets, entertainments joints and even local hotels.

3. Hawking sweets/snacks

It is one of the easiest ventures, what you need is packets of sweets of various brands, biscuits, water and other snacks.

You can hawk them in public service vehicles, bus stages and entertainment joints.

4. Selling handkerchiefs

The venture is good and applies at all seasons whether dry or cold.

You can hawk the handkerchiefs in matatus especially in traffic.

5. Baking chapati’s at road sides

You can start baking chapatis in estates. This idea has picked up and is working for many people.

What you need is a health clearance from a doctor, a charcoal jiko, and packets of flour, cooking oil and other small things.
