Consequently, they have given some of their traditional delicacies funny nicknames.

The nicknames are at times, used to lock out other communities from getting wind of their conversations, especially when the name has been derived from a common name.

Here are some of the most common food nicknames:

1. It liech

This name translates to 'the ear of the elephant', a nickname for chapati.

This has everything to do with the large surface and flat image of the food, just as is the case with the elephant's ear.

2. Buru

Buru is the Luo word for 'ash' or dust. Ironically, its also the nickname for the floor, and is mostly used to refer to corn or maize flour.

This has everything to do with their symbolism on matters particles. Sugar on the other hand is referred to as 'Kuoyo' (sand).

3. Kisumu Boys

Of course, Kisumu Boys is among the most popular secondary schools in the entire Nyanza region, the homeland of the Luo people.
