Kenya’s first black Attorney General (AG) Charles Njonjo is among the country’s prominent politicians.
Njonjo become the first black AG in 1963 after Kenya attained her independence from the colonial government.
A lawyer by profession, Njonjo was born and raised up in Kabete, Kiambu County.
Among his peers, friends, family and business partners, Njonjo is commonly known as the ‘Duke of Kabetehsire’.
He was nicknamed 'Duke of Kabeteshire' owing to his English mannerisms. Njonjo is said to have adopted the English way of life after studying in the United Kingdom.
The former AG’s way of dressing, talking and general lifestyle resembles that of the British hence the nickname ‘Duke of Kabeteshire’.
Apart from being the country's first black AG, Njonjo has held top positions among them serving as Kikuyu MP between 1990 and 1983.
He also served as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions and Constitutional Affairs Minister.
Njonjo was, however, forced to resign in 1983 after his name allegedly featured in the 1982 attempted coup.
The veteran former AG then opted to concentrate on his business empire.
