It is now eight years since Kiprono Chumba who was a student at Kenyatta University, Ruiru Campus, was shot dead inside the campus.

Kiprono is said to have been shot dead by administration police officers who mistook him for a theft suspect fleeing arrest.

However, according to his friends, Kiprono got drunk after attending a Friday night party, and could not trace his way back to his hostel.

He is reported to have ended up in one of the female hostels, where the female students thought he was a thief and raised alarm, causing him to flee.

Police officers who were on patrol at the campus shot at him, killing him on the spot. The officer who shot him said Kiprono was carrying a toy pistol, claims which were dismissed by Kiprono's friends, who said he was not in possession of the gun when he left the party.

"They shot to kill him, one bullet shattered the hand, another the leg, then the one that must have finished him went through the left side of his chest. It must have hit the heart,” said Mutai, Kiprono’s father, as quoted by Standard Digital.

Though the police did not divulge much information about the incident, Central PPO John Mbijiwe later confirmed the student was shot inside the campus by officers who were manning the hostels.

"He was shot at as he tried to scale a perimeter wall to escape. So far the officers who were involved have recorded statements over the incident," said Mr Mbijiwe.
