Witnesses said the man, Boniface Oyaro picked a quarrel with his wife before he threatened to take his own life.

"I heard Oyaro in a heated quarrel with his wife after which he picked a rope and tried to hang himself on a tree in the compound. Locals rushed to the homestead after the wife screamed for help and managed to cut the rope before he could die," said Peter Okeyo, an eyewitness.

Okeyo said members of the public descended on Oyaro with kicks and blows.

"Angry members of the public beat up the man because suicide cases have been on the rise. He was later surrendered to Manga police station," he said.

Area assistant chief Justus Ongoro regretted that a high number of men in the area were taking their own lives over domestic differences.

Ongoro said the man be charged in court on Monday.

"He will serve as an example to other men intending to commit suicide," he said.
