Kameme FM and Inooro FM owned by Mediamax Network Limited and Royal Media Services respectively are the most popular Gikuyu radio stations owing to their wide listenership.

The two regional vernacular stations are so popular that they not only rank among the top ten most listened to radio stations in Kenya, but are also oftenly ranked ahead of some national radio stations that broadcast in Swahili or English.

As a result, they are the most sought after vernacular radio stations by advertisers from whom they rakeis millions of shillings annually in terms of advertising revenue.

Nevertheless, the status quo that the two have enjoyed for many years unchallenged is about to get a big shake-up.

This follows the recent entry of a new kid in the block which is already promising 'fire and fury' on the Kikuyu radio broadcasting landscape.

The yet to be launched Iganjo 94.6 FM, promises via a promo running on its sister Kikuyu TV station (Mt Kenya TV) that 'Kikuyu radio broadcasting is about to take a major new shift never experienced before'.

And to prove that this is not an empty publicity gimmick, the radio station is said to have already poached some popular Inooro and Kameme FM presenters and newscasters.

The poaching spree is still ongoing.

The station is owned by billionaire businessman Andrew Ngirici, husband to the flamboyant Kirinyaga Woman Rep, Purity Wangui Ngirici.

Those in the know say that the Ngiricis have invested over Sh600 million in both stations that will simultaneously be launched soon.

Whether the new radio station will live up to its promise or it will turn out to be the usual hot air typical of new entrants into any industry, only time can tell and prove.
