It is easy to get a quick laugh nowadays – comedians are doing a great job. In fact with social media, every Kenyan provides a light moment no matter how tough times are.

On the other hand, there are mainstream comedians that are successful. Most of them have similar characteristics.

Trademark intro

Nearly all comedians have an intro that is uniquely theirs – no one can replicate them. It may have started with Churchill’s 'Hawayu'.

Chipukeezy’s intro was ‘itakuaje’ when he was still at Churchill, MCA Tricky’s ‘geukia mwenzako mwambie tricky sana,’ - practically, every comedian has one or an act that they do before embarking on a comedy routine.

Attire or costume

There are those comedians that have taken to wearing colourful attire or costume that makes them identifiable as unique artists.

Such comedians include Jalang’o, Creative Generation, Smart Joker, and Inspector Nico. For you to be a successful comedian it would great if you invest in a costume.

Accent

In the comedy industry, what sells as a joke is almost always packaged in an accent. Somewhere along the way, comedy gods decided that mimicking a tribe’s way of speaking a ‘foreign’ language is funny.

In line with this, invest in an accent in which to convey your funny observations in the country. Nearly every successful comedian uses accent – Jalang’o, Chemutai, Mulamwa, and Jasper Murume just to name a few.
