Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has distanced himself from a group of politicians drawn from his Gusii backyard, who have been linking him to area politics.

The group which is led by Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has since declared full support for the civil servant, who is, however, yet to make any political pronouncement for the 2022 polls.

However, the no-nonsense minister has come out to deny any links with the group and politics at large, saying that he chooses to focus on his current job as a CS for now.

“I am a civil servant and it should be understood so. I don’t play politics because I have unfinished task of serving Kenyans as the President wants,” he was quoted by the Standard.

Others said to be in the group are Senators Okongo Omogeni (Nyamira) and Sam Ongeri of Kisii, and who have been engaged in political fights with fellow area leaders said to be in support of Deputy President William Ruto.

The group organized a rally in Tindereti, Nyamira County last week, where they declared support for Matiangi for whatever seat he will settle for.

“We cannot continue supporting a leader from whom we have not seen any benefit. We supported President Kenyatta together with Ruto but the post of Cabinet Secretary we have was Uhuru’s reward to us. What did the DP give us in his share of Cabinet slots?" said Nakuru West MP Samuel Arama, another of his supporters.

The rally came only ten days after Ruto's tour of the region.

Leaders said to be in Ruto's camp include MPs Ben Momanyi (Borabu), Innocent Obiri (Bobasi), Jerusha Momanyi (Nyamira Woman Rep) and Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango).

However, Matiang'i says that he is not involved in the political groupings coming up in the region as he has an undone job in Uhuru's cabinet.
