Samuel Umtiti put France in the lead in the early minutes of the second half with a stunning header against Belgium.
As soon as he found the back of the net, a stir erupted on social media as Kenyans weighed in on his Luhya-sounding name Umtiti.
Umtiti in Luhya means someone who is small.
As the debate raged on social media on whether the Barcelona defender was actually a Luhya, football-loving residents of Garissa lurched onto it.
Here is what they had to say:
''He could be a Luhya, you never know. Luhya's should claim their own,'' Abdilatiff Osman said.
''I strongly suspect that he is a Luhya. Very muscular,'' Garba Waqfa said.
''This is interesting, I hear that Umtiti means someone who is small,'' Habiba Fahma said.
''I don't think that he is a Luhya. Names sometimes sound the same and when they do it does not mean that someone comes from a certain community,'' Jumre Mohamed said.
''At least Luhyas can brag that one of their own is gracing the World Cup,'' Saman Buno quipped.
