Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru now claims that she has received two offers to be a presidential running mate in the upcoming 2022 general elections.
In an interview with the Daily Nation, Waiguru said that she is considering the offer and will make a decision at an appropriate time.
“I have at least two offers for the deputy president position but this is not the right time to name the parties,” she told Nation.
But who could be these two politicians eyeing Waiguru for the deputy president position in 2022?
Waiguru is among top politicians who are likely to shape the Mt Kenya 2022 succession politics.
The first time governor’s popularity is steadily increasing and there has been talking that she is among Mt Kenya politicians likely to be fronted as a presidential running mate in 2022.
There is talk that Waiguru could be picked to Deputize Deputy President William Ruto should Mt Kenya region agree to support his (Ruto) presidential bid.
It is believed that the Kirinyaga governor has cordial political ties with DP Ruto and could easily qualify to be his presidential running mate.
The Deputy President has also been quoted saying that he will consider picking a woman as his presidential running mate in 2022.
The political reunion and the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga have also opened debate on the possibility of Mt Kenya backing Raila should he decide to contest for presidency in 2022.
Though the former Prime Minister has not hinted on contesting in 2022, his close allies insist that he will be on the presidential ballot.
With his good political ties with President Kenyatta, Raila could get support in Mt Kenya region should he opt to contest and this could increase the possibility of the region fronting a presidential running mate to partner with the ODM party leader.
With the succession politics taking shape, anything is likely to happen and it is a matter of time before we know who is eyeing Waiguru as his or her presidential running mate in 2022.
