Maangi claimed that a majority of the sex workers are young girls who have dropped out of school to engage in the illegal business.

"I am calling on police officers to ensure no sex workers are in town especially at night because our young girls are dropping out of school to join the sex trade. Clearing them from the streets will make those intending to quit school to remain in school because they will have no where to go," he said.

Speaking on Friday evening at Menyinkwa area in Kisii County, Maangi also argued that HIV/Aids transmissions will go down once the twilight girls are cleared from the streets.

"HIV infections have been on the rise in Kisii region due to cheap sex being offered by twilight girls operating as sex traders. We need to keep the streets clear so as to ensure no man goes to the street for cheap sex," he noted.

The Deputy Governor said the lighting of Kisii town doesn't mean sex trade should increase.

"The county government has set up more street lights in Kisii town to provide light at night for traders running hotels, kiosks, taxi drivers and bodaboda riders to operate and not for sex trade to increase in town," he added.
