Wednesday's arrest of Governor Okoth Obado has yet again elicited sharp reactions on social media with conspiracy theorists linking it with a possible signal to Deputy President William Ruto who has being linked to a host of scandals.

For the second time in under two months, Obado was arrested this time round over alleged possession of eight illegal firearms recovered from his Nairobi and Migori homes.

"This is a message to DP Ruto that he's not special. Some day in future he will be arrested over several land scandals and other corruption related issues," argues paralegal expert Vincent Omao.

Another user, Amos Onsoti added: "The government is sending a message that we shall start with your friends then land on you later. Nobody is special. Ruto should be prepared, a riot act has been read."

In May, Ruto's allies accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of hiding in lifestyle audit to harass Ruto with Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi warning that the audit will start with Kenyatta family.

But Mr David Ogwagwa, a close ally of Ruto has dismissed the fears over Obado's arrest, adding that it's purely a criminal matter which has nothing to do with Ruto.

"He is a friend of DP and was arrested on issues to do with firearms. We are reading much in a small matter," he said.

Last week, Obado, an ODM member, hosted DP William Ruto at Raila Odinga's Nyanza stronghold, a move which irked party henchmen.

Mr Obado is also facing murder charges over the death of his girlfriend Sharon Otieno in September and will return to court in May 2019 when the trial commences.
