Just as the Migori senatorial race was shaping up, with the county rebels led by Governor Okoth Obado threatening to shake opposition leader Raila Odinga’s dominance, the former Premier can now sigh in relief.

Among the ones who were opposed to his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) choice of former Cabinet Minister Ochilo Ayacko for the race was former Rongo parliamentarian Dalmas Otieno, who was also keen on replacing the late Ben Oluoch Okello.

Otieno had even decamped to the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in preparation for the race, after missing out on the ODM ticket, in what Obado termed a dictatorial and undemocratic nomination procedure.

But Otieno on Thursday dropped from the race, saving Raila the looming tough race that was coming his way and which he had to win by all means possible.

A loss would have not only embarrassed the long-time presidential hopeful but also  marked the beginning of the end of ODM dominance in his Luo Nyanza bedrock.

Uhuru on Thursday nominated Otieno to the Salaries and Remuneration Commision, after which the leader announced his exit from the race as he cannot constitutionally hold both seats at the same time.

Consequently, Raila has been saved from the insults and condemnations that were directed his way by the anti-Ayacko team, as both Obado and Otieno no longer have an interest in the race.

Upon Ayacko's assumption of office, there will be less opposers of his service apart from Obado who is, however, expected to be more busy initiating development projects and running the county.

The move is equally beneficial to Ochillo who is now assured of the legislative slot and does not need to campaign anymore after the ruling Jubilee Party announced that it will keep off the race.

He can now calmly begin preparing to take over the vacant slot after the 8 October byelection.
