A prisoner at Kodiaga Prison in Kisumu has been confirmed dead after being hacked to death using a jembe (hoe) by a fellow inmate.
Leonard Momanyi Gekonga was on Wednesday hit to death by his colleague identified as Peter Onyango Otieno after a disagreement erupted when they were working in a farm.
Confirming the incident, Kisumu West OCPD Meshack Kiptum said that the incident happened after a squabble at the place where the duo had been deployed for community service.
He added that Onyango repeatedly hit the deceased with his jembe on the head and shoulders, resulting to his death.
Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Kiptum added that the deceased succumbed to his injuries while being treated at the prison’s health facility, with attempts by warders to save his life bearing no fruits.
He had been rushed by the prison warders to the Kodiaga Prison health facility immediately after the incident but died soon after.
The deceased was serving a 5-year jail term for manslaughter while the suspect is serving a 3-year jail term for abduction.
The suspect, according to Kiptum, will now be arraigned afresh to face the fresh murder charges.
The body of the deceased has since been moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary pending further investigations.
