Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to ban sports betting in the country.
Kabogo asked Uhuru to tame the betting craze just like Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who on Sunday declared no sports betting, gaming or gambling company will be licensed to operate in Uganda.
Museveni said he banned betting due to the negative impact it was having on young Ugandans.
Urging Uhuru to copy his counterpart, Kabogo observed the betting companies were impoverishing Kenyans despite contributing a 'small' revenue to the treasury.
"I hope President UK (Uhuru Kenyatta) does the same. A few rich men are collecting money from the poor returning 20% to the poor and retaining 80% of which they pay a small percentage to GK (Government of Kenya ) as taxes. Who’s screwing who?" he asked on Monday.
Similar sentiments were echoed by popular blogger Robert Alai who urged the Head of State to ban sports betting on grounds the craze was 'destroying this country and mopping money from the hands of the poorest'.
The former county boss backed Alai's call noting it was 'immoral' for the betting companies to continue collecting money from the financially unstable Kenyans.
"I’ve been saying we stop this nonsense (betting craze) for a year now. Taking money from the poor to give it to the rich is immoral," Kabogo tweeted.
