The first-time MP rallied his counterparts not to ratify President Uhuru's proposal even though his ODM party had taken a collective position to support the controversial proposal.

"Good People, many have asked if my stand on VAT has changed, NO it hasn’t. I will Vote Against imposition of 8% on Petroleum Products. I believe that to be right, then we engage on what else needs to go, including CDF, CASs, NYS, Big 4 & Others," Otiende posted on his Twitter page.

This is one of the few times that the legislator has gone against a position taken by Raila Odinga.

The veteran opposition leader, in a meeting with ODM MPs, had called on parliamentarians to rally behind the 8 % VAT.

Uhuru's proposal has been subject to heated debate with scores of Kenyans calling for it not to be ratified as it would result in an increase in the prices of commodities.
