Sonko on August 1, assured Nairobi County residents that he will step aside for investigations to take place if the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) finds that he has a case to answer.

“I want to categorically state that, in the event, it is established that I have a case to answer before the law, I am ready to step aside to allow the EACC complete investigations and determination of the matter,” he stated.

On Friday, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered for the immediate arrest of Sonko over the loss of Sh357m.

"Investigation into these crimes have been challenging because of the repeated attempt by the accused to obstruct the cause of the investigations by deploying investigation tactics in addition to using goons to threaten law enforcement officials carrying out their constitutional mandate,” Haji said.

From investigations conducted so far by EACC, the agency revealed that the governor received kickbacks worth millions form a garbage collection company awarded a tender by the county government.

Moments after this presser by Haji, EACC detectives pounced on the Nairobi Governor in Voi. They alleged that he was trying to escape.
