The military top command four-year term end marks the beginning of a new era.

He is not eligible for re-appointment as per the current constitution. His term ends with a number of changes expected in the military.

The expected reshuffle within the forces has already started to cause anxiety among senior military officials.

It has emerged that Lt-Gen Leonard Ngondi, the force commander of the AU-UN Hybrid (Unamid) and  Lt-Gen Robert Kibochi, the vice-chief of defence forces are considered one of the forerunners in the contest to succeed Mwathethe.

The Kenya Army commander Lt-Gen Walter Raria, and Lt-Gen Johnstone Ondieki are also contenting for the post.

It remains unclear who will take over the position when the time for vetting comes.

The military top brass has remained silent on the successor of the top command.

An attempt by Daily Nation to establish the succession process of Mwathethe proved futile after the Department of Defence (DoD) spokesperson Bogita Ongeri declined to comment on the matter.

His KDF counterpart, Col Paul Njoroge also refused to comment on the matter amid speculations.

It is not known whether there are other security experts and military officers contenting for the post following the retirement of Mwathethe.
