The incident happened on Thursday at Magombo in Manga, Nyamira County. Residents claimed that the woman, Gladys Mabuka stole her father-in-law, James Barongo’s identity card so to bar him from being processed by a local bank in the issuance of an ATM.

“Barongo was among the elderly people who were being helped to process for bank ATM card which they will use to withdraw money from their bank accounts. It was unfortunate that Gladys who accompanied him stole the ID so that Barongo cannot get the ATM card,” said Agnes Nyabaro, a family friend.

Nyabaro said that when Barongo reported the matter to his colleagues, they launched a search in the woman’s handbag and found the I.D hidden deep inside the handbag.

“Gladys confessed that she had hidden the I.D card so that her father-in-law could miss out on the ATM card issuance. We descended on her with kicks and blows before Nyumba Kumi officials rescued her,” said Eldanus Nyakang’i, a neighbour.

Nyakang’i noted that people who have not attained the age of benefiting from government's monthly stipend should not be jealous of their mothers and fathers who are being supported by the government.

Area assistant chief, John Obae condemned the incident. The chief further stated that elders within the society should be respected.

“Gladys is the kind of women who should not be allowed to live in the village. What she did was bad and shall never be allowed to happen again. We should learn not to be jealous of others,” he noted.
